Dear Canadians: Stop doing this. First ducks, then this. You would think in a country like ours people would be accustomed to dealing with wild life. Avoid it, if you can and its safe. Slamming on the brakes in 70 mph zone is not safe.

Slamming on the brakes to let a squirrel cross the road came at a cost for a driver who caused a multi-vehicle crash in Nanaimo, B.C.

RCMP say the 53-year-old man’s vehicle was rear-ended by a commercial food truck and two pickups on the Island Highway. One vehicle was so damaged it needed to be towed.

Police say the man hit the brakes to let a squirrel dash across two lanes of traffic last Friday.

Well, a Canadian team would have to reach the Stanley Cup Finals to face the Anaheim Ducks. /burn

One of the things that they teach in driver’s ed is that a human’s life is more important than an animal’s. If you can’t stop safely, run the fucker down. If you can avoid it and still feel bad, pull to the side of the road and call animal services.

If it’s a gull or a goose then you are doing a good anyways.

A friend of mine told me she was taught in drivers ed that the natural reaction to something running into the road is to hammer the brakes, and the only way to counter it is to hammer the gas.

Unless it’s a deer or a moose. In that case take your chance with the guys behind.

I’m going to say this is Darwinism at work. The animal crossing the road and the person that hits the brakes.

And in any case, if the animal in question is a Canada Goose, run the fucker down regardless, even if it means going on the shoulder and in some cases the sidewalk.

Exactly!

If it’s a bear or moose, do what you can to avoid it without putting human life in danger. Those fuckers will mess up your car.

If it’s smaller, but not small enough to drive over, brake smoothly and plow straight ahead. Maintain control, take the damage to the car, and move to the side of the road if possible after the collision.

If it’s small enough to drive over, then drive over it.

Foot off the gas and over the brake. Look at the mirror. If no one is there, slow down. If someone is there, don’t slow down. (or at least not as much)

That’s how I do it, and I’ve only hit a couple of frogs so far. Both were safely between my wheels, then got scared and jumped while under the car... poor things.

It pisses me off how people like to insist that you should never make any effort to avoid an animal. No, just make sure that it’s safe to do so before you do it.

I am not saying don’t make any effort. Hell I was driving by myself at midnight on an empty road and slowed down for a mouse (why not?)

I am saying slamming on the brakes on a 70 mph highway for a squirrel is/was stupid.

I have hit probably hundreds of frogs. All in upstate new york in Sept 2013. There was frogs everywhere!!!!!! Holy crap was there frogs. I am sorry for hitting some, but avoiding them all was more or less impossible. I have never ever seen so many frogs in my entire life, it reminded me of the plagues from the old testament more than anything.

Cray.

Funny enough, deer or moose are the last thing you should brake for unless you are confident you can stop in time. Depending on what you are driving you can make it a lot worse for yourself by kneeling the car down under brakes that you would if you just hit it. I mean, its the obvious reaction, but if you see one and its already too late, slam on the brakes and at the last second, let off.

I wasn’t accusing you of that. Just in general. People like that are really only doing it because they like to kill defenseless animals, and they think it’s a fair excuse. At least that’s what I get from it.
